Ron Paul meets Glenn Beck on CIA and Foreign Policy

Last week there was a big stink made about some comments Ron Paul made to supporters at a Campaign For Liberty conference regarding the CIA. Glenn Beck decided he wanted to understand more about those comments so he had Ron Paul on to discuss them this morning.
You can hear the discussion below. I think this discussion shows that Ron Paul tends to use hyperbole (as many politicians do) when talking to a friendly crowd because at the end of this discussion it appears that Beck and Paul are closer together than they are far apart. Interesting listen…

Privateers? So we pay a government employee to hire a mercenary to take them out? The problem here is that we're 'still' responsible for their behavior/atrocities. Also, like all contractors, there's incentive to do a half-ass job, maybe extend things a little, maybe increase the need for us to till be 'over there', etc. If I am not understanding, my apologies.

This was fascinating and enlightening to listen to. I am a 50/50 guy for Ron Paul, like most people. However, in light of his explanation, I don't find anything particularly objectionable in his statement about the CIA "coup". Nor do I have that big of a problem with most of his foreign policy statements, except for one thing. Beck and Paul both talk about how congress must declare war, and then they talk a little about how the "CIA bombed another country called Pakistan", and go on later to talk about how we must crush countries which attack us. The issue I have here is the topic that was glossed over, namely; what do you do about organizations who attack us? What do you do when the countries they reside in do not officially have anything to do with them (or even repudiate them), and yet do not attack them themselves? For example, the Taliban protecting Al qaida. Do we just sit here waiting for more attacks? After all, you can't declare war on a 'movement' with no national boundries, right? Nor can you have a war without innocents, and yet Paul brought up the deaths of innocents in Pakistan as a result of CIA drones. To my way of thinking, only something like the CIA can comfortably handle these types of "wars". Its a lot cheaper for the CIA to wage a war against Al Qaida than it is to send over thousands and thousands of troops, resources and civilian contractors…

Ron Paul would answer that this is precisely what the Letters of Marque and Reprisal are for.

the Letters of Marque and Reprisal are a tool provided for in the constitution (and that is why Dr. Paul favors them). 9/11 was an okay scenario for their use (the hijackers were essentially air-pirates). there may be problems with this approach. basically you are sending bounty hunters out for the bad guys. i do not know if there has been much study into the effectiveness of this possible approach. as for being "'still' responsible for their behavior/atrocities" that is less of an issue than you think. the Letters are issued with very specific guidelines as for the scope of their use and the liabilities of the USA. the cost is up front (no open ended war funding). we could free up a lot of US navy ships currently patrolling for somali pirates (not a very efficient use of a force designed and trained to fight other navies) if we put bounties up for privateers to do the job.

I love the Switzerland reference. People wrongly assume "pacifism" but the real term is ARMED NEUTRALITY. Does anyone realize that at the time of our founding the Swiss and our founding fathers often corresponded and considered our two nations "sister states"? Does anyone realize the Swiss held of the evil NAZI empire by arming every citizen and threatening a never ending, no surrender, fight to the death guerrilla war?
We need to use our military to fight the bad guys who attack us. We don't need to use them to defend Japan, Korea, Germany, etc. etc. etc.
Glad to see Ron Paul get more and more press coverage in the past few months.

Ron Paul and his supporters are the original Tea Party candidate and Tea Party supporters. What was originally considered bordering on being home grown "terrorists" now has the whole country following in their footsteps. I'm glad Beck has come around to see the light, I'm still not happy with him calling us all terrorists and undermining the principles of this country. Better late than never.
Although I don't agree with everything Ron Paul says, I do believe he is the closest thing this country has to a founding father.. I hope his son Rand is a chip off the old block and carries his torch in the future.

50/50( like most people) for rp. are you insane. al quaida the taliban the ira the boogie man. terror and evil organizations have been around forever and will always be around. they attack us because we occupy their countries and covertly de-stabalize their countries and economies. lets stay out of other nations business/ lets trade and be friends/ spreading peace and freedom. then see who attacks us. if you really think about it most people have all they can handle raising thier families they do not sit around thinking of how to attack another country.

It amazes one to realize the extent to which this silly country is susceptible to such blatant propaganda as spewed forth on a Daily basis by FOX Noise.
These are the days of America’s ultimate doom. When a clueless thought Nazi like Glenn Beck is able to hijack America political conversation, it only proves beyond a wisp of a doubt that America has swallowed the fatal capsule of its own demise.
Seriously, did you ever, in your weirdest, stupidest fantasies think your country would fall as low as it has? It kinda makes you wonder.

Who would any intelligent, non-corrupt citizen trust…..Ron Paul….the CIA….Blackwater….the Federal Reserve Chairman….?
Right….Ron Paul. And he has answered the question regarding foreign, muslim attacks. You don't want to hear the truth. Stop the meddling of New York Puppet-Masters….and there will be no reason for any attack on the USA….or any other Jewish -Controlled Western Nation. Look at the names…..don't take my word. But ignorance is what got the West in this trouble. Common Citizenry with heads in the sand….while the Puppet-Masters manipulate away….on taxpayer fiat dollars. Ah, well…..nothing ever changes.

I retract my support for anyone who has been taken over by the same Jewish bunch that give us every candidate as our supposed "democratic choice".
i also see that the Libertarian Party has been….at the very least….usurped by this bunch.
What a Misery.
What a scam…..now i see the truth….you are riding on the emotions of a "tea-party" from Queens, New York.
Peter Schiff???? for President?????
How incredibly stupid is the average white American anyway…..is it endless?

Interesting stuff, but I was kind of hoping that Glenn would have prompted Ron to discuss the Letter of Marque. I report on the concept pretty heavily on my blog called Feral Jundi, and I believe I am the only blogger in the world who actually studies the concept. Believe me, I have searched the earth for everything I could find about it, and it is fascinating to me.
By the way, did you know that George Washington invested in privateer companies, and Thomas Jefferson was quoted as saying “Every possible encouragement should be given to privateering in time of war.” There is a reason why the founding fathers put Article 1, Section 8 in the US Constitution–because it works. Read Patriot Pirate sometime, and you will see how effective privateering was during the revolutionary war. I personally think the letter of marque could be used for both land and sea based activities, and to combat terrorists, pirates, and drug cartels. It would be far cheaper than the current way we conduct warfare, and I think it would be just as effective. It's called creating an industry out of killing and capturing your enemies, and having the state relinquishing some of it's monopoly on the application of the use of force. Just some ideas.
