With new poll numbers, Rand Paul must play good defense

A little over a week ago I wrote the following:
Ron Paul’s son Rand Paul will be the next U.S. Senator from Kentucky once the 2010 elections are over. My confidence in this outcome is inversely proportional to the confidence I had that Ron Paul would become our next President in 2008. I certainly had hope for the elder Paul, but political reality has a way of usurping hope. When it comes to Rand Paul in 2010, I am both politically confident and supremely hopeful.
New poll numbers released today show that my confidence is quite appropriate. By now, Trey Grayson must be wondering, “What the heck happened?”
The new poll shows Rand Paul with a 19 percentage point lead over Grayson:
The new survey of Kentucky by Public Policy Polling (D) gives Rand Paul, a conservative activist and son of Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), a huge lead over the establishment candidate in the Republican primary for Senate in 2010.
The numbers: Rand Paul 44%, Secretary of State Trey Grayson 25%. Grayson was recruited to run in place of two-term GOP Sen. Jim Bunning, who is retiring. Paul, however, has mobilized his campaign around the Tea Party movement and his outsider conservative message.
This is certainly encouraging news, but now I can’t help but wonder… Is Rand Paul peaking too early? This will surely invite more rabid attacks in an attempt to discredit Paul as a candidate. The question remains can the lead be maintained through next May’s primary? In the campaign fund raising battle Paul has proven his mettle. Being a charismatic and clear speaker is another strong suit for Paul. Now we get to find out how well his campaign can defend a barrage of attacks that are sure to come in light of these poll numbers.

When you've been at it as long as I have, this news is joyous and requires stopping and smelling the roses til New Year's. "Peak too soon?" Three words not in my vocab until Jan. But yes, Dr. Paul's campaign staff better be sharply focused and know exactly what to do when the attacks come.

Rand Paul is bad for Kentucky. There's no way Kentucky would vote for him in the general election. He's showing a lead now because of the out-of-state money that's poured in to get his name out front and center. The only real conservative in this race is Bill Johnson. If Rand Paul wins the primary, you may as well kiss goodbye any chance for a Republican win in the general election. There's also been a gamechanger which makes this poll moot – the fact that Rand Paul selected an anti-Christian racist to be his campaign coordinator. This lead won't last.

The election is Paul's to lose but he's a sharp cookie. Grayson will most likely self-destruct in a desperation play that will end up backfiring on him. If Paul wins the primary then the general is in the bag. Grayson needs to either cut into Paul's numbers or grab 26 percent of the undecideds. That's more than 3/4 of them. That would be a feat given the war chests and fundraising of both candidates.

I'm a lot more concerned about Rand's stance on preemptive war than how someone with an agenda posted something on Chris's Facebook page. If that little trick could be traced back to Grayson, his chances would be over. (I hardly ever look at my page. Who knows what someone could be putting there that could be used to smear my reputation.) As long as he sticks to the issues, Rand Paul will stay above the fray of dirty tricks and politics as usual.

Rand I hope you read this. I am from upstate NY and I WILL VOTE FOR YOU IF YOU RUN. We, the American people, have become frustrated to the point that most are no longer able to palate the rancidity of what the political establishment has or attempted to force upon us. Both parties, the status quo, are simply the collective wills of special interest groups. They groom and select their operatives, package and present them to the voters as candidates of choice with the illusion that somehow there are profound defining characters, philosophical or ideological differences between them. They sell themselves on the basis that these perceived differences set them apart and provide choices in determining whom are worthy of governing in the interest of America and the American people. In reality these choices are only doubled headed coins, hedged and selected by greater masters, special interests, and beholden to serve those masters and themselves, not the people that elected them. Vote for a candidate in 2010 that is beholden to only one special interest, the American people. Vote for real change, vote out incumbents or party representatives whom have proven true what has been stated.

Rand Paul is excellent for Kentucky and brings real solutions to the problems we face as a country. It's funny how you have to attack someone besides Rand, becasue it's quite obvious Rand himself is the real deal. I know you may like your guy, but he won't even poll 5% before this is over. I'd be surprised if he even gets that in the primary. I'm not telling you ro vote for Rand, but don't be a hater just becasue your guy is losing.
Not to mention if I was Chris Hightower I'd be sueing you for defamation of character. I've had the chance to talk to Chris and he really is a nice guy. It's a shame to see people make up this stuff about him.

Bill Johnson's got his talking points out on the street. This is the third verbatim comment on this subject I've read today. At least try to mix up the words a little!

Rand Paul is a beacon of light in a dark fog of political opportunism and corruption. He will make an excellent Senator. He believes the gov't should operate within the confines of the Constitution.

The poll was taken after the silliness with the campaign coordinator. But of course, you know that, just like you know Rand is neither anti-christian nor racist. And you also would know he is pro life if you'd stop being a shill for Bill Johnson for 2 minutes, long enough to read what Rand has said — that he will support a Federal Life at Conception Act.

I don't believe he has peaked yet… the numbers will continue to climb as the people of Kentucky learn who he is and what he stands for. RINO hunter.

Rand Paul is leading both Democrat opponents despite the fact that they are better know than him. Paul will be the strongest general election candidate because he can combine the small goverment crowd, social conservatives, independents, the tea party crowd together and bring in thousands of brand new voters.
Paul will be so strong that he will help small government candidates running for Congress in Kentucky.

Lisa…you have GOT to be a Grayson employee, or you are living in a dream world. And why in the hell would I want a Republican in there, anyway? Rand Paul is good for Kentucky…Repubs are not, and Dems are worse.

Whew! Glad to find this forum. Posting on Huffington can't get very trying. Can't wait for Rand to win. See if he stays true, then on to the big job.
