What an interesting discussion Judge Napolitano had with the wonderful Robert Higgs on Freedom Watch last Friday. They discuss how Barack Obama is more easily compared to Herbert Hoover than FDR.
Speaking of Robert Higgs, he will deliver a lecture on Monday evening at George Mason University. The event is free and is hosted by the Mason Economics Club and the Future of Freedom Foundation. For more details see the FFF web site and scroll down to the events section.

I!m much less interested in who compares Obama to whom, than who he is. He is commander in chiel of the military, presiding over two wars with no military experience, Hes running the big business of the us government and a large auto company and never had any experience operating even a little small business.. He is heading up the drive for reformed socialistic health care, and not a doctor.. He!s the head=knocker handling as the CEO billions in things like stimulous, and not an economist. He flies to Dennmark to represent us in olympics bid, yet hes not an athelete
oops did I say I1m interested in who he is, not really, more interested in who he is not.

The peak Smoot-Hawley tarriff was 20% and accounted for a much smaller percentage of the GNP than the monetary policy mistakes. And Smoot Hawley was passed AFTER the stock market crash. Most European countries have a 15% tarriff on imported US goods, so why don't we retaliate? We can't afford to not have tarriffs because our countries overhead is so high that we are not competitive. The anti tarriff people should explain how we stop the hemoraging of US treasure caused by the trade deficit.

Obama is neither.
He has all of the power FDR gained during his reign, and then some. He has the protectionist tendencies of Hoover. What a combo. What a mess.

Tom, I highly recommend Amity Shlaes' recent book, "The Forgotten Man" for more on this subject.
