What I find interesting, is recoiling my memories of primary education, to which I cannot clearly define the time in which these two were compared and contrasted with one another. While we said the pledge of allegiance in the morning, and restated the line, "and to the Republic, for which it stands", we were later indoctrinated in our Social Studies classes to believe that we were also (the same?) a "Democracy".
