Rand Paul talks about his name and Ayn Rand

Rand Paul has put up a new video at RandPaul2010.com dispelling all the myths regarding his first name. He also discusses being a fan of Ayn Rand and a few of his favorite books.

I think it’s a great idea for Rand to release videos like these. In doing so he becomes more than just Ron Paul’s son. We get to know him as an individual rather than through his father. Hopefully these “get to know me” style videos continue.

Rand Paul is scheduled to be on the Brian and The Judge show on Fox News Radio during the 9am (Eastern) hour. He is also scheduled to be on with the Judge on Freedom Watch this afternoon at 2pm with several other freedom loving guests.

Murray Rothbard was not a close associate of Rand's. The met only about six times in total. Unfortunately Murray exaggerated his association with Rand well beyond the facts.

CLS is right, Rothbard was never a close associate of Ayn Rand. And do not believe the spin her enemies (Rothbard being one) put on things. BTW, this is the same Murray Rothbard who allied with the Marxists in the 60s, and who attended the Socialist Scholars Conference at which he called the American flag "a bloody rag" (source, Alice Widener article in Barrons). His nutty "anarcho-capitalism" speaks for itself.

Rothbard is someone I was very privileged NOT to know. And I did know Ayn Rand quite well.

"Ein Rand", "Brothers KaraMOTzov", "Das Toy Evsky"… can this man pronounce any names properly? And I'm of no relation to Ayn Rand, I think her theories were kooky, amounted to pseudoscience, and were completely selfish. Her "surname" was a pseudonym after all.

Pseudoscience?!? She wasn't practicing any type of science at all, it's called philosophy. And of course her "theories" (once again you are confusing philosophy and science) were completely selfish, that was kind of her whole point. I am just guessing by your post that you have never given her "theories" even so much as a cursory glance.

Yeah she really was a nut, advocating "kooky" things like personal responsibility, individual rights, free thought, limited government, and capitalism. What a nutbar!

Harry Binswanger, Ayn Rand was right about a lot of things but she was dead wrong on abortion. You wouldn't be an abortion lover would you? Close to Ayn Rand you say? I assume you think killing your offspring is an individual right? Sick! Anyways Murray Rothbard is awesome as is his anarcho-capitalism. You are probably some abortion loving freak that says a lot about you and Ayn Rand.

    Derek,

I disagree with you. Ayn Rand was correct for advocating limited government and capitalism, and individual rights. Only problem is individual rights does not mean you have a right to murder other individuals even if those individuals are you own offspring.

Mark, I believe you (and many others) are mistaking potential human life for actual human life. Now, the case can certainly be made that since there is no clear line of demarcation between the potential human and actual human (the first trimester cut-off seems rather arbitrary to me) that we should err on the side of caution and ban abortion outright. I tend to lean slightly towards that way of thinking myself.

If however, you think that a fetus is merely a potential human; i.e. because it is unable to survive outside of the mother's womb, it is essentially nothing more than a fully dependent, biological growth; then the termination of that fetus isn't murder in your eyes. In fact, it is no more immoral than having an unwanted mole removed.

In my short time on this planet, I have yet to meet the person that says, "Yeah, I believe that fetus is definitely, 100% a human being…but scramble his brains and suck out that little sumbitch anyway!" If I did happen to run across that person, I would seriously doubt their capacity for logic, reason, and even basic human empathy. In other words, I would think they were nuttier than an outhouse rat.

My biggest concern at this point (especially now in the anti-individual era of Obama) is that those people who consider themselves to be pro-individual, pro-limited government, and pro-Capitalism, do themselves a great disservice by attacking and disregarding out of hand, one of Capitalism and individual rights' most powerful and articulate defenders simply because they happen to disagree with (or in many cases, don't fully comprehend) her stance on an issue or two.

What a farce. Wishy washy. Either you chose Rand because of Ayn or you didn't. And if you never answered why you did shorten it. And if you did, because of Ayn, that's just kooky. I think it's logical to conclude the reason was Ayn(what else would it be, his wife liked Rand better than Randy, and it's a coincidence he and her both like Ayn) He's afraid to admit it cause it would alienate a certain voter block, so he tries to have it both way. Pitiful. I'd never vote for this weasel

In your ideal "anarcho-capitalist" world there would probably be dead babies in the street who will have been helpless victims of mass greed without limits or morals. If you are anti abortion because Jesus says so, then consider Jesus also said to be thy brothers keeper and do unto others ect…good god, he sounds like a fucking socialist! Atleast Ayn Rand was consistant with her selfish views and was a stanch athiest.

Was Ayn as Randy as Saint Paul, the man who demanded that women keep silent in the
    church?
Aren't you glad Randy Ayndy never met Sainty Pauly?

I truly loved the one that said "his" books, never knowing Ayn was a woman's name.

That reminds me of the politician who favored placing the Ten Commandments in a state
office building. Then when the reporter asked him to list the Ten Commandments, he could not name a single one. As my Mother said, if ignorance were bliss, we would all be
    blistered.
