Marxism's influence in this country goes back lots further than the 20th century. Check out the book "Lincoln's Marxists" published by Pelican Publishing in Gretna, Louisiana and you will begin to get a grasp of just how far back the tentacles of Marxism go in this country--all the way back to the 1830s, before it was even called Marxism. Also check out the latest article on http://revisedhistory.wordpress.com

I made comments to Dilorenzo about this subject at Lew Rockwell's site.
To sum these up: The takeover of the universities by the Cultural Marxists (CM's) and others, such as the Politically Corect, is old news--the CM's have finally gotten around to Dilorenzo's Loyola.
But they were first at Cornell and Harvard years ago--as Harry Jaffa, Allan Bloom and Harvey Mansfield can attest to personally. The CM's hate Straussians as much as they hate Austrian economists or libertarians or neconservatives or neoConfederates.
There are at least three factors in the CM's war--the alumni, who demand that their children/students be awarded grades they didn't really earn, the CM professors who began many academic departments that advocate CM positions (the laughable teaching prsented in the Afro-American studies deptartments that Aristotle stole the wisdom of the African ancients is but one wild CM theory that is now the orthodoxy) and the CM students, many acolytes and disciples of these professors, with a fervor to match any of Ron Paul's folowers, who now have student committees to judge the professors work.
But the university was never any free marketplace of ideas--indeed, if Dilorenzo caught any of his students seriously considering the merits of Harry Jaffa's position on Lincoln, well, that student would suffer--and the reverse is also true, that any student who took Dilorenzo's position against any of the so-called Jaffa/Lincoln cult (Dilorenzo's monker) professors would also suffer.
And such culture wars are not limited to battles of CM's vs those others mentioned--there are libertarians vs libertarians over the need for the State; Catholics vs Protestants ( I hardly need point out that no Catholic, holding to the chief tenets of that faith, would survive at say, Bob Jones University)
The university has become another armed camp--and one must be very careful about choosing a university or college to attend--a collision with the wrong college will ruin that prosective student's whole year.
