The Ron Paul Dilemma

Much talk has occurred from Ron Paul supporters about whether he should abandon the Republican Party and run as a third party or independent candidate. He has painted himself into a GOP corner. The truth is that the Republican Party has abandoned him, but he refuses to flee to the friendlier confines of another party. It seems he believes doing so is a losing proposition. It probably is.
He aims to give the GOP a much required makeover by punching at the base of it’s neo-conservative tower. This certainly is a noble effort, but is it also a losing one?
His once enthusiastic supporters have become divided. These aren’t necessarily the ingredients of a successful “movement”. It’s interesting so many supporters seem to have their own ideas about how the Ron Paul campaign should move forward rather than just letting Ron Paul decide how to do so.
Ron Paul has always preached freedom. He encouraged all of the positive grassroots efforts throughout the campaign. His live and let live policy was a huge attraction for many to him in the first place. Why can’t his supporters behave Ron Paul-like in return? It doesn’t seem to be in their nature.
Now, Ron Paul supporters are at a crossroads. There is a real danger of the disintegration of the movement. We are our own worst enemies.
Ron Paul has always been candid about what he is trying to accomplish. He feeds young and hungry minds the rhetoric of freedom. It is the young people of the United States that will make or break his effort to reform the GOP. He has inspired many to run for office. Revolutions take years, not days. They are inherently difficult. Liberty does need eternal vigilance. So do revolutions.
Ron Paul is the kind of person to spark a revolution, but not follow through on it. Like it or not, there is a stigma attached to him. It is not his fault. The tactic of dismissing him as crazy worked. The tactic of laughing at him during debates worked. I hate to admit these things, but the marginalizing of Ron Paul worked like a charm for the establishment candidates and media. The racist smear article certainly hurt as well.
I had a dream that people would be treating Ron Paul the way Barack Obama is being treated. Obama has taken the independent vote that I thought Ron Paul would get. Obama has taken the young vote that I thought Ron Paul would get.
Ron Paul’s allegiance to the Republican Party has helped become his undoing in the end. The lazy voters of the country jump on and off bandwagons as if they are fads. They jumped away from the party of Bush and on to the momentum of change. Ron Paul did not represent that change. They never gave him a chance. The media didn’t help. Obama became their change flavored kool-aid instead.
If the economy spirals downward in the next few years, we’re going to need a 2012 Republican equivalent of the 2008 Obama. No not Ron Paul, but an Obama-like candidate with Ron Paul’s positions. Could it happen? Yes. Is it likely? Not unless the current divide amongst the Ron Paul faithful heals itself with the good doctor’s own freedom medicine.
A great opportunity for healing will be the forthcoming Ron Paul DC rally/march. My family will be there. If you believe in the freedoms our founders envisioned you and your family will be there too.
