Romney suspends his campaign. Huckabee, Paul is still in, for now.

Romney announced today at CPAC that he is suspending his campaign for President. I was somewhat surprised by this development and it leaves me disappointed in Ron Paul’s chances now. Ron Paul has been counting on other candidates to stay in so that the delegates would be split up with each primary and caucus. Without Romney there, the media will call McCain the nominee. Yes, even though Huckabee and Paul are still in the race. They will be ignored. Well, at least Ron Paul will be.
It would not surprise me to see Huckabee suspend his campaign soon paving the way to have McCain choose him as his running mate. Many in Ron Paul-dom are happy. Many are sad. I’m leaning towards the sad side. I think this is bad news for Ron Paul’s chances. The media has already shut him out acting like he isn’t even running. This will likely continue unless something monumental happens. The only thing I can think of that could happen is that the GOP would unite behind the only true conservative left in the race: Ron Paul. The likelihood of that happening is about as slim as it gets though.
The GOP establishment doesn’t like McCain, but they dislike Ron Paul even more. The hope is though that some will really do some introspection about their support for the Iraq war and slide over into the Paul camp. Not enough will do that though. The GOP culture is too stubborn.
I wish Ron Paul could say some magical words today to win them over. He is speaking at CPAC at 4:30pm. At this point a little miracle with a sprinkle of magic dust is what is required. If you are a religious person, pray. If you are not a religious person, think happy thoughts.
I think we are looking at, at least, four years of semi-socialism with a Democrat in the White House. That is, unless history repeats and the Democrats snatch defeat from the throes of victory. They don’t exactly have a stellar recent history of capitalizing on the GOP shortcomings. We’ll see.
On a related note, poor Romney. How much of his own money did he squander on his unsuccessful campaign again? $30 million plus? That is a lot of wasted cabbage.
